On the one hand it is a niche, on the other, it is a manageable size and
well-defined topic, and the gimp and other FLOSS tools are at least
adequate.

The one that might take a moment to leap to mind and understand the
importance of is authentication, where Gnupg and/or Gnotary provide
suitable solutions.
